It’s time to look even deeper and see how @VMware Cloud Foundation for Operations handles tracking what’s happening inside an application.
Imagine you’re cooking a big dinner for the family. You have different ingredients, pots, pans and spices. Every element has to be perfectly in sync for the dish to come out perfectly. It’s the same with apps-we have to keep track of every ingredient (i.e. component) and make sure everything works together flawlessly.
We’ve been publishing here for a long time about advanced mechanisms for detecting anomalies, failures and finding the root cause of problems in applications. In recent episodes, we focused on IT infrastructure. Today we’ll take a look and see how to connect that world to the application itself.
Often when talking to CEOs, IT executives, or those most interested in the high availability of their application, i.e. the business audience, the question is asked, “Can we really see our entire application, including the IT infrastructure and its SLA, in one tool and on one dashboard?
Can I see what the cost of this application is?
Can I, from this one panel, go to the details and see all the components it is made of?”
The answer is: YES!
There is a bit of work involved, although most of the links between elements are created automatically. We, as INDEVOPS, just help create the appropriate management views and, if needed, provide the necessary plug-ins to VCF for Operations to look even further (beyond the horizon of individual IT teams).
In this case, we look further inside the application thanks to Flopsar Technology’s solution, and then we pass all events to @VCF Operations, where the finished, collected elements of the application are already there: IT infrastructure, operating systems, databases, application engines, network flows, logs from each of these layers and other elements.
But what about the cost of such an application?
Once we have a full collection of its components, the costs can be automatically calculated based on the data collected in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). We can also adjust these values, taking into account actual IT expenses – from licenses, to hardware, to electricity, to racks and other resources.
This approach is crucial for business. Why? Because it gives full transparency – the company knows exactly what it is paying for and what SLAs it is receiving, and IT becomes a reliable partner for it.
We, the INDEVOPS team of experts, are here to make sure you can rest easy and enjoy uninterrupted availability of your applications.
